The Cultural Fire Credit recognises and acknowledges the value of Indigenous cultural fire knowledge methodologies, and supports communities maintaining or activating cultural fire practice on Country to:
- achieve recognition for their existing efforts in cultural fire management
- independently prepare for and implement cultural fire on Country
- deliver the Indigenous-led, place-based Firesticks Learning and Mentoring Program
- contribute to the training and engagement of a network of Indigenous verifiers across Australia.
The number of credits required to implement cultural fire in various locations will differ depending on the type of terrain; the unique set of threats faced by the area, which influences how long it takes to transition from sick to healthy Country; and the level of training required prior to commencement of burning.
This is why a register of interest is required prior to purchase – so that Firesticks can conduct an assessment of the location in consultation with the communities in order to provide an estimate of the number of Cultural Fire Credits that will be required to plan for and implement cultural burns.
